Artist’s Statement

I paint cartoon portraits and animation inspired scenes in Gouache. I love to paint small works on paper in a straightforward, unaffected manner. I see my art as a continuation of American Illustration and Cartooning practices. Specifically underground comics and lowbrow art.

Biography

James Michael Johnson was born in Seattle, WA, then later grew up in New Jersey and Upstate New York surrounded by creativity. A love of comics, classical art and a step dad who took the time to teach him how to draw, gave him an early appreciation of the arts. He attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, where he learned the basics of art and figure drawing but is mostly self taught in painting. James exhibits his work exclusively online. He currently resides in Brooklyn, NY with his wife and dog.
